Scientists at Sandia National Laboratories have recently announced the development of a new more efficient type of solar cell. The ultra-thin photovoltaic cells are made from crystalline-silicone and have the potential to turn a person into a solar charger if incorporated into clothing or bags. The cells are only 14 to 30 micrometers thick, making them 10 times thinner than standard 6-inch-by-6-inch sized cells, yet they perform with the same level of efficiency. They use 100 times less silicon to generate the same amount of electricity. Because the cells are so small their tolerance to shade from obstructions is also better than conventional photovoltaic panels.
It is their potential to be mass-produced and wrapped around unusual shapes that is the most exciting. From clothing, to bags and tents, the cells have the potential to be easily incorporated, making it possible to charge batteries for phones, cameras and other handheld gadgets whilst on the move. The cells may also be used in arrays on the roofs of homes, warehouses, and offices, and could have intelligent controls, inverters and storage capability built in. Another benefit to their small size is that if a single cell in a solar array were to cease working it would only marginally reduce overall efficiency, compared with a significant loss in a conventional array.
